Off The Road Series (Take-1)

Art- Mikhail Palinchak Jr
Off The Road Series-

Candlelight Dinner with Sir. Elton. John-

This was Amsterdam. LGBT realm. Mushroom haven. Whore port. Individualistic dystopia. Museum madness. Canal channels. Boathouses. VV Gogh. High art. And lotta genuine duplicitous Dutch.
Where I was once serenaded. Like a ladybug. By a bumble bee. He was a pianist. In an antique piano shop. A misnomer. It looked and felt more like some rich widowed old lady’s private ballet hall.
A boutique. Gleaming classic pianos shone with artistic panels. Voluptuously curved. Sexily crafted. The summer sunlight dancing off its polished wood. Rich with care. Old and grand. New and brand. Proud in the hall’s spacious call.
Then he sat at a piano. The man showing me this boutique. At the chosen one. A pretty contemporary dame. Yamaha. It read. He could play. The classics. The Maestros. The Virtuosos. With odd names. The odder the better. Besides being a smart salesman. This man was himself a pianist. An artist.
Impressive. Encore done. (Just for me).
Then came the proposition. A dinner date. With him. In an Indonesian restaurant. Supposedly chic. An offer that was made to be taken. (What the hell man I’m thinking. I’m Bhutanese. Danger is my pet name. Thundering Dragon my birth name. Playing with arrows and darts and rocks and spears- our casual game. We don’t flinch. We don’t mice. We pound dice).
Sure. When? Where?
The chic Indonesian was a lizard-lair. Asian art gone kitsch. Become Amsterdamn’d. We met. We sat. We talked. We drank. We ate. Wining. Dining. Still foreplaying. Played-out on a candlelit table. For two. Almost romantic. Almost par. Almost even. Almost. But. Reality bites. The last supper done. The tease exhausted.
I did my bidding. As tactfully as the moment would allow it.
If nothing. Timing is everything. Rush and you crush. Delay and you belay. So the message relayed. Look- I enjoyed the attention. The music. The conversation. The meal. The company. And the invitation.
But shit man. I do love the women. I hope you don’t feel bad. Cos man! I actually feel good!
He was gracious. No slight. No blight. No dog-cat fight. We met as strangers. Queer as it was. We departed friends. And perhaps. As relieved rangers.
(Now I’ve an inkling. A teeny weeny bit. Being pursued. How a woman might feel. In such a manly chase. And an interesting insight in how a man hunts. Let's just say I'm happy hunting. Without becoming cannibal.
That said. I’m done with pianos. Odd-named Maestros. Eccentric virtuosos. And I assume- candlelight dinners with pianists like Elton John. (Forgive me).
Make that the Rocket Man
No. Make that Sir. Elton. John. The Rocket. Man)
No offense.

Light Shadows

There’s a shadow in me. It feels naked in the light. It’s a showdown. Between what it desires. In the moonshine. And what it fears. In the sunshine. It’s a lighting conundrum. Spot on. Beam on.
There’s a shadow in me. Loves twilight. When the moon fills up with more moon. It's a beautiful night. When dawn breaks. It soaks up the early bird song. And as dawn brightens. It longs for the setting sun sight. At dusk. It breaks its husk. Smells the dark. Night's musk.
There’s a shadow in me. But it doesn't box. Mind you. It doesn't hate the bright side. It just loves the shady shade. Without masquerade. Without any hide.
There’s a shadow in me. It digs sunflowers. And the day trippers. But it just prefers the company of fireflies. Falling stars. Lost satellites. Lazy bonfires. And dim lamplights.
There’s a shadow in me. It’s got a sunny memory. Gazing up at big blue skies. Sipping chilled beer. Watching waterfalls. Soaking rainfalls. And walking mountain hikes.
Yet the shadow in me was never in me. It was deflected. Reflected. Finally rejected. It became the shadow in me. It still recalls high-noon shadows. The first cast. Down south. And quite by accident. It’s been a shadow ever since. Tailing. Mocking. Blocking.
There’s a shadow in me. We’ve a truce. There's never any shadows following you in the utter dark. And even if there were. It wouldn’t matter. We’ve become buddies. Mates. Chums. When it’s pitch-black we merge as shadows. And when not we are shaded shadows. Shadowboxing. Playing. Bonding.
And so. Thanks to the daylight. Thanks to the serenading nightlight. And thanks to the absence. And presence. Of black. And white light.
As Sun. Moon. Stars. Dawn. Dusk. And their pure light.

Off The Road Series-

Only There Only

I drove the old gypsy. Betsy. She’s now an old hag. But her engine won’t stop. Still runs (Esp. from coppers). But on a deafening screech. Age hardens the ears. And blunts the curves. She’s now a dent. (I must learn to see dents as dimples). Anyways. Isn’t loyalty the oldest nobility?
We drank the night.
But.
I got lost looking for Milliways. Thought it was in the old country- England. But Etho Metho Plaza they said. (What’s with Plazas I wonder? Buildings always do sound more structural. Solid. Even professional. Better than Plazas. Let’s not talk Squares! Remember Sheare? It's really Squared.)
Milliways? I ask. Frantic. Still nervy at the English association. The rainmaker sends a downpour. It’s raining Solly and the Babas. What Milliways? They retort. Intelligence insulted.
This is Bhutan. Specifically Thimphu. Small town. Big directions. Above that thing. Below that shop. Next to the road. Just around the corner. Only there only. And when you do locate X they’ll tell ya “I Told You So!” Taking the credit. Making you more indebted than when you entered in.
If only I'd paid attention to Only There Only.
(Ps- Milliways is a cool cafe-rant at The Etho Metho Plaza Attic, a panting 999 steps from the street above the PunDokan.
Now you too know it's Only There Only- Solly Baba)

Off The Road Series-

The Thing

Whatever your thing. Work on the thing. Don’t cheapen it. Don’t sell it. Value it. Respect it. This thing is alive. Avoid showcasing. Keep the thing intimate. Don’t go public. With private follicles. Retain the faith. Trust the thing.
Be patient. Mindful. Aware. Of this thing. If this thing feels like a raw thing. Work the thing some more. Give it time. Let it cook.
Let it space. Go even-steven. Marinate. Fuck the rush. Jack the temptation. Keep your thing secret. Give it room. Let it breathe. Let it live. Make it sacred. Make it divine. But keep it earthy. Even if the thing should soar in the sky. Bring the thing down. To the ground.
High heads walk on lowly feet. Lowly feet rests on abused sole. Abused soles stick out in neglected toes. Jammed toes finger the limbs. Distracted limbs bends the body. Crooked body needs balance. Balance minds. And mind makes the thing meaningful. Without hurrying. Worrying.
That’s how the thing flowers. Like weather changing effortlessly. Self-evident. Natural. Expressive. Spontaneous. Discernable.
Like blades of grass creating expansive meadows. And woods turning green with content. Red with passion. Blue with space. Dark with grace. White with wisdom.
Resist forecasting. Predicting. Ripe fruits kiss-hug gravity. Premature falls sour-bitter. And when the thing is ready. It births.
It expresses itself. As it is. Profoundly. Simply. Whatever the thing. take care of this thing.

Off The Road Series-

Jack Wise

Where gratitude is absent, the scorn is persistently present.
It’s the same decay that’s been rotting all your life. And as Jack hollered, we can’t handle the truth.
Jack's spot on. Those wicked brows and grins are bang on. Shit.
It starts with us. And that starts within. The realm of the mind. Devoid of that inside-job, outer phenomena always falters. Falling short.
Like racist rainbows, leaving out the color black. Like discriminating rivers, flowing south. Arrogant mountains, climbing north. Forested jungles, creeping with vines, snakes and beasts.
Even the Awakened Buddha, forever sits and serenades.
Or Heroic Milarepa, caving in.
Our own Divine Drukpa Kinley, screwing around. Even our lovely kingdom flaws, bored-in with peace. And Holy Tiger’s Nest, where the walk becomes a drag.
When such nobles can inspire critique, ordinary life becomes one long sadistic strife rife and riddled with cynical dissatisfaction. Dangerously appearing natural. And alarmingly accepted.
If confession is the beginning of practice, then let us keep confessing. Let us keep practicing. But if we can't put up, then let us shut up.

Off The Road Series-

Lights Out

“Where you from?” I ask. “Korea” she answers. “How is it? Korea?” I ask, curious for a Korean’s answer. “Shit” she declares. Her French boyfriend elaborates, saying the place has got too many global brands. Life’s hectic, consumerist, and that tradition’s taking a toll. “People don’t know what’s it like to live without electricity. We live on an island in a Mongolian yurt, and we’re teaching people to live without electricity,” she adds, jumping in. “I know what it’s like to live in the dark without the telly, the car, and other luxuries now commonplace,” I chirp in, recalling the seventies/eighties, “but if you aren’t aware of those things you don’t miss them.” That’s quite true. Now I couldn’t live like that, being aware of all the things I’m aware of.

Off The Road Series-

Miss Happiness

"People are people. I don’t know if the Bhutanese are happier than the African Bushmen. Arctic Inuit. The Native American. The Australian Aborigine. Or in general people anywhere. But if there’s a degree of some inherent kind of happiness, inherited or apparent, I guess that’s the level of happiness of the Bhutanese people, generally speaking," I add; a tad awkward at this happy slotting. "And maybe we’ve a government with a neat PR," I add on. Which opens the subject to its next logical conclusion. “Why so expensive?” I used to blanket this query with the word, “protection” but somehow it doesn’t ring true. Not entirely. “We couldn’t cope if the borders were flung open. We’d become one big messy Khao San Road and that would be the end of it,” I clarify. And mostly it works.
